.avi Problems

I have a small problem... I downloaded Buffy Season 1, and they are in 12 .avi's totalling over the top DVD's can hold. (393 MB a piece)
Is there any file format I can convert them to that will not diminish quality but still reduce the filesize?
If so what tool would help me?

get the avi joiner and join them all, maybe u would wanna try to get 2 dvds out of them by joining 6 avi's and 6 avi's

then download ulead dvd factory to get it in the format 2 burn,

it really depends on the size of each of the 12 avi's

If their are credits, you can go in and trim those off,
