just wondering how many members understand irony
    for example if i said:

"i fell of my chair laughing"

could you tell me where the irony in that line is?
i would say its because i tried to post something ironic but came out with mostly crap
also, i heard somewhere that Americans don't do irony, so it'll be interesting to see if its true

Well I'm American, and I think I have a firm grasp on the concept of irony. If you listen to the words to that Alanis Morrissette song "Ironic", you would assume that it's Canadians who don't do irony. For example, she says "It's like rain on your wedding day" which is not really ironic, it's just a bummer. Now if that couple were to go on and have a sunny and perfect marriage, then it would be ironic.

You are correct though Darth, a lot of people use the term irony too loosely, without understanding the need for a twist or surprise ending.

That should be "Off my chair"

As this is a thread about Irony...is it Ironic that the example doesnt make sense?

I thought 'irony' was simulated ignorance.

That is one meaning, although a desired end at the least opportune moment is also ironical - for example winning the lottery the same day they announce a giant comet is going to hit the planet would be rich in irony.

I always heard that if you got married on a rainy day that it was supposed to be good luck
