...how does this sound....
I bad mouthed Partition Magic...
cause my pc wouldnt boot after a change (deleted a partition)....
what I did was delete the D: partition (recovery partition on teh Compaq),
and for some reason its the first partition,
the C: (the one with my OS installed on) is the second one,
so naturally my boot.ini points to the #2 partition...
I'm guessing that when I delete the first, it's unallocated,
so the C: is now the #1 instead of the #2 partition, yeah?

well can you boot? if u can then why are u complaining? if you cant then boot with the xp install cd and choose to do a repair install (not recovery console because i dont kow how to explain how to use that one) and it will appear to be reinstalling windows but it isnt really it just fixes the boot.ini and reinstalls teh drivers and updates from www.widnowsupdates.com get uninstalled but all your programs and files stay intact.

or you would see that i'm not complaining, just asking a question....

two...
the system recovery isnt hard to use, thats how i saved this pc
(and not all the files/programs are left intact, FYI)

maybe i should clarify myself, i asked the question(s)
to find out if the problem was caused by the boot.ini looking up the wrong drive,
because of a change made to the partitions,
(like, a partition dissappearing)
that way i would know then that all i'd have to do (theoretically),
is to modify the boot.ini

but that is what did it right, what fkd up the pc?
having unallocated space in front of my c drive?

If you can get into the recovery console it will solve problems like that easily. You just do a bootcfg /rebuild to search for working boot entries only. And there's always the fixmbr as well which does not work for me unless I do a bootcfg too.

Anytime you delete a recovery partiton you will more than likely have to alter your boot.ini. Thats's why it's good to delete it as soon as you get or purchase the pc and then put whatver o.s. you want on it and not the one that came with the pc. Even if you converted the unallocated partiton to free space or a regular partition then it still would not have made a difference. The fact that it's unallocated does not matter.

Instead of giving consumers cd rom disk we now get a shitty recovery partition so I do not blame you for deleting it. I just leave mine there since most of the times recovery partitons are under 2 gigs. And when you delete it there goes your warranty as well.

after runing any oprtion on ur partions using partions magic u must run "DRIVE MAPPER" and any way after rebooting partion magic starts Drive Mapper atuomaticly i think u haved cancled that opration or didnt choose to install that function at all.

i have a hp pc and i have a recovory thing.
i just backed it up on 6cds made 2 coppys so i used 12.
did u back it up if u did then try rebooting it with the cds.
