    What does [sic] mean. It's appeared in a book I'm reading several times.

    It means a mistake that is meant to be there.

    For example, if a book was quoting George Bush it might read: George Bush said "They misunderestimate [sic] me".

    Not really, [sic] means "as it origianlly appeared", or "in the source's own words". You will see it when someone says something politically incorrect like "Mankind", using "him" instead of "him/her" and other feminist crap like that. It sort of means, "can you believe the guy actually said that, it's not how I would say it because I'm much too sensitve to that sort of thing."
