Think about it like this then, get a 2500+, yes fine ok for a year. But then you find its getting outdated etc, and you have to fork out £160 to buy the 64 3000+ you could have bought a year ago had you not got a 2500+.Originally posted by peerzyboy@24 March 2004 - 20:07

Your choice though, a 2500+ will probably suit you well, just depends how far you want to go with it.

I think the 2500+ will be just fine to last a few years if he wants it too. the only problem with it will be if he wants to try out the 64-bit windows...he can't.
btw, does anybody know if longhorn is for both 32bit and 64bit, or if there is going to be two versions of it or something?
okay well how much is a 64bit mobo and 3000XP 64bit gonna cost me (cheapest)?
EDIT: and does it mean i need to get new ram as aposed to usin some from my old pc?

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ $279.99
Thats pretty expensive, and it's US prices. I couldn't find a 64 3000+ so i used 3200+, but you can find one on a website you like, this just gives u a rough idea of the price.
and yeah you will need some better ram, has to be more than pc2100 or it will really bottleneck the system. I didn't post any because i dont exactly know what kind the 64bit's need.

It is a computer simulation of how proteins fold up into their active state after they have been formed. It is thought that mis-folded proteins may be the cause of many diseases including cancer, alzheimer's, BSE etc.
Because of the billions of possible combinations it is necesary to get as much computing power as possible to do this simulation - this is called Folding@home. It uses spare cpu cycles on your pc so it doesn't affect your performance.
By joining up you may help to find cures for some of these diseases.

Back on topic....
Is this mobo any good, and will it work well with this CPU, and is the CPU any good or should i push for a 3200XP:
Gigabyte GA-k8vt800 S754 VIA K8T800 Sound LAN USB 2.0 FSB800 ATA133 Retail Box
AMD Athlon 64 Bit 3000/512 l2 Cache 754pin CPU OEM
And how much longer is a 64bit CPu gonna last me than the 2500XP?
Well since 64 bit allows for around a 33% improvement, and its also a faster rated CPU.
I'm really not sure, but go for the 64 if you can. Your choice in the end, use us as a guideline.
By the way, your old RAM will work. You only need registered RAM for the 64FX and Opteron series.
EDIT: The 3200XP costs as much as a 3000+ 64, the 64 seems the obvious choice to me.
Maybe keep that motherboard in your current machine and go for both when you get a bit more cash. A 2500XP downloading, and a nice 64 games box
Well this is what i would get if i was to get a 64bit AMD.
Anybody have anything to say about any of the parts (good and bad)AMD Athlon 64 Bit 3000/512 l2 Cache 754pin CPU OEM
£157.36
Gigabyte GA-k8vt800 S754 VIA K8T800 Sound LAN USB 2.0 FSB800 ATA133 Retail Box
£62.91
Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9800 PRO 128 MB DDR 8x AGP DVi & TV-Out
£169.70
Samsung 512 PC3200 DDR400 184pin Original Memory Module
£88.71
Western Digital Caviar 80Gb 7200rpm EIDE Hard Drive - OEM
£42.62
Thinking about it, it will proberly be better to get a 64bit its just the having to buy a whole new mobo that pisses me off after just getting a brand new skt A one
