i'd suggest centrino, it's a nice balance between performance and energy efficiency

Anyone know why Centrino's run at lower speeds than their standard counterparts?
Have they got an improved chip design?

Is this why Intel is suddenly saying GHz isn't everything?

go for the centrino for sure, its probably same if not better performance than the p4 1.8ghz, and the batteries will definately last much longer than the P4 which is a very important factor when buying a laptop.

It's a laptop. So if you'll be plugged in (corded) go Pentium 1.8. If you'll be battery powered (cordless) go Centrino M 1.50. Simple.

    Centrino is not a processor.

It's a series of components consisting of a Processor, Chipset and a wireless PCI card.

These all have to be from Intel in order to get the "Centrino" label.

And that's what it amounts to. A label.

You can buy other brands and they will be of similar specs.

For example, every other notebook that has built-in wireless will offer 80211b, 80211g or more than likely, both.

My point being is, check into others that aren't labeled "Centrino." You may just find yourself a deal out there.

    peace.
