ok i cracked and changed serial no and when i downloaded sp1 and installed it windows would not completely load halted at the background and would go no further. Is loading sp1 from microsoft a problem or is it ok to download from there

i think you have to change ur product key before installing SP1. try the mr. dude key changer, it can be found using kazaa lite.
Well, I suppose you changed it before installing SP1. It could be that you chose a bad key or if what you are talking about it hanging during installation, then press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and select the the process of the SP1 installer and change the priority to something higher. I've seen sp1 installations hang until the priority was changed.
