Thread: Can Anyone Reccomend Me....

  1. #1
I've checked my IP over at IP Chicken.com and I found that I have open ports.

Whats a good FREE program that can protect me from hackers and such?

What you are looking for is a FIREWALL

    I highly recommend Sygate Pro.

Once you have installed it, post your results below of a before and after of ports open, closed or in stealth mode.

Good place to do a port scan is http://www.grc.com/. Look for Shields Up! and proceed to 'Common Ports'

is that a good idea to run two firewalls like that anyway? I run sygate pro and protowall as they work differently but running sygate and zone alarm wouldnt they clash?
Shut that cunt’s mouth or I’ll come over there and fuckstart her head.

You can make your own router or hardware firewall.
You can take an old piece of crap machine, install Linux on there (eg: Smoothwall) and configure what ports to allow traffic (it'll have a simple web interface you can use) and that's it. You made your own router... for free. It can even be configured to do Network Access Translation if you have multiple machines. It will protect them all.

To find out which processes are using which ports then use this free utility, FPORT

Do you have a router? mine used to show a few ports as being closed instead of just not responding, so I had to forward them to my computer. use the port forwarding command on your router config page to forward them to your computer, then the firewall will block them, or you could just send them to a random IP so basically nothing will happen and you wont need to have a firewall at all.
