You don't need to bother doing the fdisk stuff I don't think

Its simple, you screw it in your pc, attach the ide cable. boot up your pc and press f11 or whatever to enter the bios, pick up the drive in there and you're good

I could be really wrong here cos I haven't actually done it myslef

I have done it and given my stupidity it was pretty straigtforward (4th gen helped me )

you might not need the f11 thing as xp autodetects the new device so all you have to do is format using the inbuilt disk management tool in xp, also very straightforward, just a click.
