Avs Kept Crashing My Explorer

I uninstalled norton 2 days ago and installed AVS 7.0 from suprnova... ever since then windows explorer has been crashing almost every time I've opened my "My shared folder." I just uninstalled it, I was wondering if I should go back to norton or if there is a better option, either free or on suprnova. (I looked on suprnova for NOD... I don't see it on there.)

NOD32 is great. But there isn't a crack that lasts. You could keep using trial keys, but that can be a pain in the ass. So you can either try to find a crack ir you can go with AVG. The only two anti-viruses I would ever recommend. I've used a lot of them, but I haven't tried AVAST, though.

In any case, AVG has a very goo free version and an even better shareware version.

I suppose you could go with the other freeware alternative, Avast Anti-Virus.

You may also be able to find a crack/serial for Kaspersky Anti-Virus which is also a great product.

Ohhh, you probably got the old AVG, the one with the bad serial.
A lot of people have been using a serial or a certain keygen and the makers of AVG caught on and made updates totally screw around with AVG, if you have a serial that uses the old algorithm. It's possible that may be what was causing the crashes.

There was one released not too long ago that may work better. I still trust AVG a LOT more than I could ever trust Norton.

should I just go with the free version of AVG? whats the difference anyway? And one more thing I wondered, does AVG have an auto protect sort of thing like norton does?

OF COURSE! An anti-virus would be anything without an autoprotect. It's called the resident scanner, I believe, and NOD32 calls it AMON (Antivirus Monitor). The main reason I would choose AVG or NOD32 over Norton is because they are FAR better in detection. You don't usually have to scan for viruses. It usually catches them in the act.


AVG 6.0 is very good, and if you want less problems with cracking, go with it. The only real differences with 7.0 is that it is faster in pretty much everything and is more configurable. There are more, but those ar the most noticable. 7.0 also updates more often by default (if you want it to do it by itself) and I forgot, but I think it checks all extensions by default, but you can just select that in the settings for better protection.

I wouldn't buy 7.0 because 6.0 is that great. If I had to, I would just go back to 6.0, but at the moment, I using NOD32. I hope that helped ya.

Before you responded I went to the free 6.0... and my explorer is still crashing.... it was totally fine for the period of time when I had no anti virus installed, is there any reason you could think of that this is still happening?

And thank you so much for all the advice and help so far.

Edit: Also, even though NAV is uninstalled, if I try to delete the folder from program files it tells me a dll is still in use, could this be the reason that this problem is occuring? somthing left over from norton interfering with AVG?

Are you sure you don't have a virus? Perhaps one that is directly attacking AVG? They exist. Maybe just checking the NOD32 on-demans scanner, just to be sure.

This is a long shot, but maybe it's some file left behind by some program you once had Try going to the program files directory of AVG and deleting everything after uninstalation, and do the same thing with Norton, and check the Application data directory, as well.

I would also clean the registry. RegSeeker is great for that.

But if all else fails, you can just try another anti-virus. I hear avast is pretty good, but like I said, I've never tried it.

It's kinda funny that you were thinking along the same lines as I.
Well, if that's the case, open task manager (control+Alt+Delete) and see what's running. If it's anything Norton, get rid of it. Also, check to see if you have Live Register or LiveUpdate installed (they are usually seperate) and get rid of them and clean the registry.

Hopefully, that'll do the trick.
