16x is the future, but 8x is here now, the thing is if you have 8x media and a 8x burner I would burn at 4x just to be safe, but on the other hand, if you only have 4x media/burner then i would only burn @ 2x
plextor is one of the best I could recommend, but it will cost more than than your overpriced sony
why are so reluctant to purchase a nec, all the reviews are great

Not so much relucant to buy NEC... I just want the best for the best price. I just check the PX-708A on pricewatch.com for $100. One of the negtive things is a 2mb buffer... but that seemed ok if I dont do much while I am burning. Other than that, it got great reviews. I hope I can still find it for $100.

BTW where is your review on the NEC? Lemme take a look at that.

    Thanks

Here is a link to the PX-708. What do you think about this one muchspl2?

I will look into the one NEC you were talking about as well. Where did you purchase it?

I have both a NEC 2500A and a Plextor 708A. After burning about 100 DVDs using both drives I definitely have to go with the NEC 2500A. Even more now that "The Byte Brothers" and "Herrie" are working on the Dual Layer Firmware for the Nec. While the plextor would burn Ritek 4X DVD+R media at 8X, the NEC would only do 6X (1.06 firmware) unless you upgrade the firmware to 1.07 (I am using Herrie's 10.7beta9) where you can burn at 8X on Ritek DVD+R 4X media (Which newegg also sells).
With the plextor you can easily distinguish about 3 different zones on the burned side of the DVDs while on the NEC they look very even. A few DVD-R discs I burned with the plextor did not work on my PS2 even though they were readable on the PC. I have had no failure with the NEC and Ritek media. I am expecting the new Phillips DVP642 that plays divx out of CDs and DVDs and will post again about the compatibility of NEC+Ritek on the DVP642.
The last thing is the price, the NEC is half the price, YOU CANNOT GO WRONG with the NEC.

Links above are all the same drive, just some are OEM, so no retail packaging and drive comes in white box...

I appreciate the info on NEC. I am not so concerned with speed and burning movies yet. I am just getting the DVD burner to backup my mp3s on larger format discs as opposed to using a reg. CD-R. Anyhow, I will look into getting one of those. Thanks again.

There is present availability of double-sided media: DVD-RAM.

EDIT: Three new DVD standards have virtually emerged overnight, and they happen to be 2.4x DVD+R DL, 12x DVD+R and 5x DVD-RAM.

LG has revised its "Super Multi DVD Writer" to release the GSA-4120B, which coincedently supports all three standards. The only criticism held against this drive is the fact it lacks 8x DVD+RW support, which the Sony DW-U18A doesn't - albeit, it merely supports 2x DVD-RW rather than the 4x of the LG. But both Sony's and NEC's new burners aren't truly exceptional.

Ok... so, now I get someone that is discounting the NEC. So, what to do, what to do, hmmmm....

Well, I know that technology does change overnight all the time. And things only get smaller, quicker, cost less, work better, and hold more information. I just have to find the best quality for the money at this time, as I really need to burn my mp3's on disc to free up space.

So, I guess I am still up in the air about buying a burner. Shall I get NEC or now I see LG. But, I might stick with muchspl2's suggestion about the NEC. My question is though, first of all.... where do you think the best place to purchase the NEC is and secondly.... what model? Shall I go with the 2500 or the new 2510A? I dont want to have problems with the 2500 if the firmware is acting up.

Also, I did notice on the specs of that NEC, that its buffer is 2MB... the same as the Plextor. So, I am wondering if the 2500A has a larger buffer, just in case I am doing other things while burning, which I will most likely want to do.

    Lemme know.

    Thanks.

that shouldn't matter, if you don't care about dl burning get the 2500, next year a dl that burns @ 16x will be the same price are better, the 2500 works great with the hacked firmware, in fact should have no problems, but the 2510a comes out of the box guarantied 8x dl supported, so it's really a toss up right now, ESP the deference in price, last I checked it was 88.00 for the 2500 and I paid 92.00 shiped for my 2510a 3 days ago (it's 86.00 now http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc....-152-023&DEPA=0 )well i just got it instaled, about to burn my first dvd
