I had to do it once or twice. It sounded really muddled, so I ran the files through Steinbergs T-Racks...brightened it up, made it sound pretty good. Prefer it over Cool Edit or Sound Forge for fixing the sound. It doesn't have anything special for "vinyl pop or tape crackle" though.
Maybe I'll check it out...isn't it called something else now?

Yes - I think Adobe has aquired CE. It's now called "Audition". Check their site.
