Help!

anyhow: heres what happened:

i was playing ut2004, and it locked up. i tried to lock the comp, and it went thru the locking process, but had not yet shown the "locked" screen (all that was on the screen was the wallpaper)

anyhow, a friend of mine reset my comp, and when it was trying to load XP, it sed:

E:\windows\system32\config\system is corrupt or missing. try replacing the file using the original disc.

anyhow I CANT FIND IT ON THE CD!!!!! HOW DO I FIX IT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?


lol the file "system" has no extension. i am currently logged onto longhorn

It happens.. what you need is to get a bootlegged i mean legit cd and restore it.

Yea, go try it. I doubt it'll work though.

When you repair xp, you will have to reupdate your computer i suggest using autopatcher which has every update up until now.

run a repair install

you won't loose any settings that are curently setup after doing it

edit: But you will have to reinstall drivers, and all windows updates since the ones on your cd...

(it wont reformat, but ill go thru a sh_tload of trouble just to reinstall the service packs )

You should have download the net install (the one that&#39;s like ~270mb and you can install again later on after a format without downloading it all again)...

then it wouldn&#39;t be too much of a bother would it...

btw, where did you get it from? www.betaplace.org or P2P?

Repair install only deletes your windows folder and everything related to windows xp only.

That means the System Registry Hive has become corrupted.

There are two ways to get back up and running. The easy way which doesn&#39;t always work, and then there is the hard way.

When you are booting your system, press the F8 key during the start of the bootup sequence, meaning after it does the Power On Self Test.

Once you press the F8 key, you will be taken to a Menu. Select "Boot Using Last Known Good Configuration".

It will now attempt to load Windows XP using a past set of configuration files.

If that doesn&#39;t work, there is the next step....the hard way.

Hard Way
Boot your system with the Windows XP Install CD, let the system boot into the Setup. Once in the Setup, choose to run the Recovery Console.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to good old DOS.

First, we will recover the System Hive.

Now, type in the following commands with pressing Enter after each line.

md tmp
copy C:&#092;windows&#092;system32&#092;config&#092;system C:&#092;windows&#092;tmp&#092;system.bak
delete C:&#092;windows&#092;system32&#092;config&#092;system
copy C:&#092;windows&#092;repair&#092;system C:&#092;windows&#092;system32&#092;config&#092;system

Be very careful when you are typing in these commands, one wrong move, and you have, broken Windows XP.

Also, change the C in the commands to whatever your Windows XP drive letter is.

Attempt to boot the system, if it doesn&#39;t boot, get back into the Recovery Console and do the following commands.

md tmp
copy C:&#092;windows&#092;system32&#092;config&#092;software C:&#092;windows&#092;tmp&#092;software.bak
delete C:&#092;windows&#092;system32&#092;config&#092;software
copy C:&#092;windows&#092;repair&#092;software C:&#092;windows&#092;system32&#092;config&#092;software
