I just buy games that were released 4-5 years ago. They cost nearly nothing (thx bargain bins ), they still look good, and they'll run on any decent machine.

Just wait till 2008, pick up FarCry for $4, and play it on your "outdated" P5 4.8 Ghz with 2048 MB RAM and a 512 MB gfx card.
    that sounds right

even the best alienware is going to be outdated in 2 years, I believe that's a scientific law (I'm serious.)
I believe you're touching on Moore's Law, which states that the number of transistors per square inch on the intergrated circuits of a chip would double every 18 months.

However, development goes at such a pace nowadays that it isn't even 18 months between doubling

If you're tired of upgrading, just get a new console. Just need one of those every 4-5 yrs til they come out with a better one. Or just stop playing.

2008? I've got 2GB of RAM, and 512MB graphics cards are round the corner. 4GHz (or at least rated that much equivelant) will be around late 2004 early 2005.

This is retarted. The reason we need better hardware is cuz games reqiure better stuff because they look better and have more features and stuff. They shouldnt give hardware away. Plan your buying of hardware carefully so you get a good deal that will last a while.
