my roommate has the annoying habbit to directly connect her computer to the ethernet modem whenever we're out of the house, since we have a router her download speeds are slower when connected through it (prolly due to incorrect portforwarding, but plz dont tell me i should do that ).......

i have no means of stopping her do this (other than buying a big gun, which kinda isnt an option), so i was thinking, is there any way of setting up the modem or anything that she HAS to go through the router?? (just ordinary ethernet modem, no extras)

well its like this:
this is what it looks like now:
Code:
|
| <---- incoming phone line
|
+-----+
| | <---- ethernet modem
+-----+
|
|
+------------------------+
| | <---- router
+------------------------+
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
ME romie1 romie2
this is what she does when we go away:
Code:
|
| <---- incoming phone line
|
+-----+
| | <---- ethernet modem
+-----+
|
|
romie1
my question is: is there any way for us to make the internet not work this way(the second way) (and thus making her give up doing this)?

no, its normal LAN, and i plug her into the router, but cause MSN down/uploads dont work properly behind a router, she keep plugging it into situation #2, which is really annoying when im downloading something

fix the ports or buy a router with an inbuilt modem may be your only options

I have the solution, follow these steps:

1 Go into her room

2 Disable the modem from the computer

3 Step on the modem with your foot, don't be afraid to use force

4 open the window

5 Throw the modem out.

Solved!
