first, make sure you can actually view the file extension.

Windows Explorer (hold down the little 'windows-logo' key and press E at the same time) > Tools > Folder Options > View

In the view menu scroll down and uncheck the box that says "hide extensions of known file types'

click OK and exit that little window thingy.

go to the file you want to change.
    click it once.
    press F2.
    rename.

ya like sparsely said but remember u can't change something like an avi into a mpeg file just by file extension it has to be re-encoded.

mainly used when a file has the wrong, or no, file extension.

yeah, I still don't get why they're hidden by default.

Because like ROSSCO_2004 said, n00bs will change avi to mpeg instead of recoding it. Then they will complain there file is currupt.
    blah blah blah... whatever...

ah. you mean the good old 'cater to the lowest common denominator' principle, huh?

yeah, that's a good thing to do
