This is not a Mind Altering tweak but One Which Eased an Itch.
Nor is it copied -but painfully thru experimentation&advice.
Hopefully someone has a simpler solution.

    PROBLEM
    _____________________________________________________

LOOK HERE: RightClick Start button\Properties\Taskbar\(mark hideinactive)\Customize\Past Items

The list in Past Items contains programs uninstalled a long time ago.

I tend to un\install alot of software & Registryclean etc. after uninstalling.
    The list still grows

    SOLUTION
    ______________________________________________________
Open Regedit (start button-run-type: regedit -ok)
    Go to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify

    The right page says
    IconsStreams REG_BINARY 14 00 00......
    PastIconStream REG_BINARY 14 00 00......

Delete Both lines (rightclick to delete) - Close regedit

Open TaskManager (press Ctrl-Alt-Del) - Processes - rightclick Explorer.exe - End Process -Yes
    File - New Task
    Type: explorer.exe
    ok
    _______________________________________________________
    Now Check (startbutton\properties\taskbar\customize\past items)
    It is Clean.
Once you start using different programs again- they will turn up
    and build up again...

Windows has a lot to fix.........

What you want to do really is modify the binary data to 0000.

This way windows will not cock up trying to find 'traynotify'.

Btw, this tip (and many others) is easily found on microsoft's support pages.
Worth looking at and doing a search if you have any niggling windows problems.

LOOK HERE: RightClick Start button\Properties\Taskbar\(mark hideinactive)\Customize\Past Items

Or an easier way would be to right click on the taskbar itself.

    I recommend the below program to everyone;

    "jv16 PowerTools"

It would remove all craps hidden anywhere in your computer. Than just playing with your registry keys anyhow. B)
