Ati Radeon 9600 Pro To 9800 Pro

Hey,

I currently have a 9600 pro video card, a p4 2.6 ht cpu and 1Gb corsair pc 4000 ram. I figure that any performance bottleneck for gaming is the gfx. First question is would I be right in my assumption?

If so would it be advisable to upgrade to an 9800 pro card just now? I dunno what kinda performance increase to expect nor whether it is a good time to buy this kinda card?

Any help/advice/recommendations/opinions etc would be very much appreciated.

I would like to oc my cpu and gfx in case that affects your opinion.

Try a softmod, different drivers, Ati tool first? Just a thought.

Hi Pete thanks for the help.

I have actually tried the ati tool, using the sofmod cataylst 4.7 drivers thanks.

It&#39;s a nice wee tool.

I can get my Core speed up to about 530 from stock of 400, but only manage 305 from stock 300 for my memory.

I have read a few reviews of my card e.g my card reviewed

and it seems from each review that the results I am getting are about as good as I can generally hope for.

I got my auamark score up from 26000 to about 32000, which I am happy about (I think)

with my system

(btw I have an Abit IC7 MAX 3 mobo, forgot to mention that above )

I think that the bottleneck is the gfx card, though I am not sure.

Upgrading is a very good idea, you dont know what peroformance and upgrade might hold for your graphics power.

I guess it&#39;d be worth it if you answer yes to one of the following questions.

1. Do have more money then brains?
2. Is there anything right now my current GFX can not do?
3. Is my life about nothing more then benchmarks?

If any of the follwing questions got answered with a yes, then go for it.

Well it&#39;s true
Unless there is something that your current gfx can not do, then there is no real point in upgrading in my opinion.

id have to agree with kaiweiler:

unless you really need the extra power, why trade your &#39;obsolete&#39; care for another obsolete care?

the upgrade will prolly cost you more than its worth.....

ok folks, your guidance is appreciated, I think I&#39;ll stick with what I have at the mo

My reason for upgrading was purely for gaming reasons , I fancy being able to play newer games such as far cry, doom etc at near top set ups. The reason behind getting an 9800 rather than an x800 was that a) I can&#39;t afford it , B) I figured that it was a good card now down to a more reasonable price and I may be able to sell off my existing card to recoup some of the cash. However I understand where you are coming from, I&#39;ll certainly give it a good think first. Thanks again

I upgraded from a 9600 pro , yes its a nice performance boost.
But its only because i needed another card for my other computer , so i used the 9600 pro in that one and got a new 9800 pro for this computer.

But the 9600 pro runs alot cooler then the 9800 pro , case temp (im my old case) went up 7°C

And that with 2 x 12 cm intake fans and 1 12cm and 1 92mm and 1 80mm outake fan.
