Why ponce about with an xp processor?

Why not go for an athlon 64?

A regular xp processor, say a 3000+ one is only really on par with a new 3.0 pentium when it comes to open gl apps and such, granted that's probably what you'll be running the most.

    Otherwise it's somewhere between a P4 and a Celeron performance-wise.

Now, if you want the fastest, and can afford a P4 EE, you should be able to get an Athlon 64.

Those beat the P4's with a margin.

Oh, you can notice a gain in recent stuff like Doom 3 with using a lot of RAM. And it's future proof.

Development is hardly gonna stop with one gig ram machines.

yeah i also recommend the coolermaster stacker case , it has lots of room.
Lots of place for 12cm fans.
And if you want to go water cooling in the future , you dont have to worry about the space you got. its HUGE!
And you can transform it in to a btx case

Only thing i dont like about my case is that alot of dust gets stuck in the front "grills".
But i do need to vacuum my room more often.

Doom 3 at peak has been known to push RAM usage to 1.1 gigs.]

2 gigs is relativley futureproof, as the S-man says.

that's why i'm getting 2gb dual channel, i don't want to get em later down the road or everytime a new game comes out , as for the mobo that clocker said, i'm very interested in Asus, i'm gonna give it a look soon. now the case, i never knew that 80mm was weak , 120mm sounds reassuring but as someone stated, i would want to go to watercooling later down the road so the coolmaster case sounds like a good option. the processor, now i really really really need ur input on this guys. 64 bit AMD? or an AMD athlon XP 2800+ (2500+ is also an option at the moment)? when do u think the 64 bit OS will be hitting the market? if im going to buy a 64 bit processor, i want to use it to it's full extent, so really guys, i need ur input on the processor choice

I think it's going to be at least two years before a 64-bit CPU will make much sense. Even after the 64-bit OS is released (2006?) it will take a while for all the other software that utilizes it to be released.

By then you'll have a much better idea of which tech you want to invest in- PCI Express, BTX form factor, DDR2 RAM, etc.

But the 64 bit processors are still the overall fastest ones on the market currently.

And that's with regular 32-bit apps.

I've seen them outclass P4's in a couple of tests.

k, after so fuckin long i'm finally building my new rig (to handle doom3, hl2 and future games in all of it's glory). here's wat i'm ordering, suggest other parts please:

    Ordering:

MEMOERY: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-220-010&depa=1 DUAL CHANNEL 2x1GB (2 gb total) RAM PDP SYSTEMS ordering in 1 week or if i feel like it, when i've got all the parts listed (gotta save those pennies )

MOBO: Suggest a good one that goes with the ram listed above
(184 pin of course) and also, has to be 8xAGP

PROCESSOR/CPU: Suggest something that's easily OCable and fast, i was thinking intel pentium EE HTT ones say 3.2 ghz or higher, i don't want AMD's because up to date i thought AMD 3000+ was 3 ghz only to find out it wasn't even 2.6 , i need something above 3 ghz atleast, suggestions needed

So, you are ordering memory without knowing what mobo or CPU to buy?

That sounds like really smart move, especially as it costs only $ 380.

    Strange people we meet here.
