Norton Anti-virus flashed up and said the computer had a virus and that it could not fix or delete it...

Can anyone advise on what I could do to get rid of it?

If it identified the name of the virus, I normally just google it and try and find removal instructions from there,

If it really is a Trojan Horse, download a legal trojan Remover. Install it, update it and use it for the period of trial (usually 30 days). These are specific programs to wipe trojans.
