    What for?
If you convert from one lossy format to another, you will surely get a VERY crappy version of the encoded movie.

the post said this: have an xvid file and would like to convert it to divx just to keep things simple (meaning I will only need one codec).

So the guy wants to keep things simple by not installing a codec just once, and yet he will ALWAYS have to convert from XviD to DivX.

    WTF is that?!!!!!

Wouldn't it be MUCH more simple just to install the XviD codec?

It seems really stupid to convert an Xvid encoded movie to DivX every single time you download one of those.

Yea well my guess is he's to lazy to DL the codecs but to dumb to realize the extra work involved.

Then why don't you explain him that he can be extra lazy if he just installs one lousy codec?
Tell him that's the easiest way.

Just give him the link to the XviD codec: Koepi's XviD Codec or Nic's XviD Codec

Yes it is but if you want to watch it on the pc keep it as Xvid. If you want divx to go to mpg for vcd then its worth doing it.

Why download a bunch of codecs when all you need is K-Lite Codec Pack. It has every codec you'll ever need!

You can use VirtualDub to encode XviD to DivX if you would really want too. But I can't think of a single argument to do so

XviD can be converted directly to mpeg too.
