its just like with media files, you dont wanna be stuck with a crappy standard like [fill in microsoft media file name here]?

all the new stuff you named is out yet cause theyre still to expensive........

and the general public will prolly get pissed if they have to get a bluray now cause they wont sell normal dvd's anymore......

DVD dash R & dash RW (DVD-R, DVD-RW) were developed by... Pioneer and some of their partners, i think. DVD plus R & plus RW (DVD+R, DVD+RW) were developed by a different group of companies. why did two different groups develop two different types of recorable DVD?... because there's a lot of profit in owning the patents on a popular technology. every time a disc or burner is sold, the companies that own the patents get a cut of the profits. everyone thought that eventually one or the other would win out (like in the VHS vs Betamax competition) but instead they've both continued to be successful.

as for HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray... Sony's Blu-Ray was the first blue laser DVD to reach the market, but it's been used primarily with PC so far. Sony hopes to make Blu-Ray the next generation movie disc too, but when it came time to submit a proposal to the DVD Forum (a large group of companies involved in DVD technology) Sony didn't meet the deadline. Toshiba had their own version of blue laser DVD and won the contract to develop the HD-DVD movie disc format, which means they are going to make a lot of money from all of the HD-DVD movies and players that get sold in the future.

Sony may go ahead and create a movie disc format to compete against HD-DVD, but if they don't get the support of other companies (movie studios & player manufacturers) then it will be a tough sell. in fact, Sony just recently bought MGM from Ted Turner in order to get hold of MGM's huge back-catalogue and increase the number of movies they'll be able to release in Blu-Ray format. up till now, it was looking as if Blu-Ray had been knocked out of the movie disc competition, but the purchase of MGM could be the thing that gets Blu-Ray back into the race.

as for other formats that are superior to blue laser... they're still coming, of course. they're just further off in the future. new technologies need to be tested & refined, and they have to come up with cost-effective manufacturing processes that make it affordable to consumers. there's no point in creating a new entertainment gadget if it's so expensive to manufacture that nobody can afford to buy it. HD-DVD and "Blu-Ray Video" (or whatever's it's going to be called) are going to be expensive enough, when they come out.
