    Optical drives are cd\dvd drives.
    ide cable is the wide wire that plugs into the drives.
    jumper is a plastic bit on the back of the drive that you move to 1 of 3 (or more) positions.
    Mainly, master or slave. (master means it is hooked up to the end of the ide cable, slave if it's in the middle).

    Why are jumpers important when an optical drive stops working? They don't move around on their own and if they were wrong all along there would have been problems before.
    Who suggested updating drivers? CD/DVD drivers are only needed for DOS.

    Yeah, you can try and update them but they never get updated - especially by the drive manufacturers - because the original Windows ones always work perfectly.
