Is DivX the same as Xvid?

My DVD player plays DivX files and just wondered if it'll play Xvid too, or is it the same format and I'm being dumb?

Im pritty sure its close enough to play on DivX players. I believe Xvid started ou as a modification of DivX. So Yes it will.

DivX and XviD are very similar. Both are an implementation of MPEG-4. However, the MPEG-4 specification has lots of different 'profiles' with all kinds of advanced features.

A player that supports DivX, usually supports MPEG-4 in general, so also XviD. But most players only support a few (or none) advanced features of the MPEG-4 specs.

The newest GSpot can tell you which adv. feat. a movie uses. For example: BVOP, QPEL, etc.
