Quote from same article : They should also help to popularize the new formats for consumers and encourage them to purchase players compatible with the Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD formats.

i really think i'll be able to hold off buying a blu-ray compatible dvd player. i dont really need HDTV quality for movies right now. dvd quality is awesome.

but its for this reason exactly that i'm scared to actually buy dvds.

I think the point of this was to make it possible for a BluRay disc to also contain a DVD part. Meaning, it'd be blu-ray for your blu-ray and DVD for your DVD.

Just use DVD till one of the formats wins, Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.
Quite a few bought Laserdisc players before DVD became popular.
