The Semmering-Railway has uncontested a very important status under the world's mountain railways: It is the first one which crossed a high-mountains area and counts therefore as the prototype of railway lines rich of bridges and tunnel as well as a symbol of taming the nature. A drive on this railway line was experienced aesthetically from the begining and influenced in the sequel also the perception of the alpine landscape. The route was buildt in the middle of C19th (1848 - 1854) and shows a very varied and interesting history of planing and construction. Altough at this time there existed no expierience of such a large-scale railway line in such an area - neither in construction works, nor in operation -, there happened no bigger accidents since the beginning before approx. 150 years. The Semmering-Railway is until today a railway main line and still in regularly operation.
