i think you're really missing out on what winamp offers. you didn't change the EQ?! no wonder you thought it sounded like shit. a flat EQ is useless. if you ever do get winamp, turn on the EQ & go presets>load>preset... & select Rock or something.

I think you're missing what the AC97 mixer does on the latest motherboards; it's not just an EQ but also a surround processor which will affect all sounds from all applications.
