Baiko, born in 2003, was the second walrus-baby ever to be born in a

European Zoo, after his brother Nikolai........CNN on birth Baiko.

Baiko brought masses of poeple to the Dolfinarium(Dutch "Seaworld") n

Harderwijk, wich is about 15 km from where i live.

Yesterday he went in a coma during surgery on one of his big teeth....

Apperently he had a pancreas disease, wich made he couldn't cope with

the general anesthesia he got for the surgery.........

    It's just not fair!!!

He was soooo sweet and cute............ :crying:

    Don't get me started!!!

The Amersfoort Zoo wanted to kill half of their Gibbon-population, cos it grew

    too big over the years............

After massive protests by various organisation they changed their plan.....

But too be fair, it's like that all over the world, not just Europe.....

    Zoos suck.
I plan on beating him to death with his kids. I'll use them as a bludgeon on his face. -

--Good for them if they survive.

    Not all of them, imho.

I am somewhat ambivalent on this point.

Like ApenHeul(MonkeeHill) Primate Park is really great, aswell for the animals

    as for the visitors....

And many zoos nowadays create habitats that are awesome.......

    (For instance Burger's Zoo (english

    button at the bottom)

Also some breeding programs are very important for the preservation of

    endangered species.

But, yes, in lots of cases zoos still suck.

Though i think there are much worse scenarios going on right now, like the

polution of the seas and the fast decrease of rainforest, like in Brasil.....

Yeah, some zoos are better than others, but they still suck. Just because there are worse things in the world doesn't mean that it's okay to keep a lion in a cage.

As to the breeding programs, I'd say that if it was helping the animals re-establish themselves in the wild - and that was the only thing that the zoo was doing - ie. there weren't any animals there that were not endangered, then fair enough. Mind, I'd call that a sanctuary.

Species die out all the time, in fact some 99.99% of all species ever to inhabit this planet are now extinct. It's nothing new and should not be unduly worried about, however if it is man's fault then we should try to redress the balance with breeding programs rather than zoos designed purely for people to gawp at poorly treated wild animals.

Prevention is obviously better than cure, tho'.

Every dutchman should be obligated to read that book to learn about

    adapting and tolerance.

I hope some day that book will be made a movie off........
