the fan on my video card started making loud grinding noises, like a jigsaw cutting through metal - i've unplugged the fan now, how long do you think it'll last before overheating?

even better can you think of any reasons why it would just suddenly change from near-silent humming, to buzzing like a powertool cutting things, damn similes

    Time to replace the fan.

As to how long it will last before overheating... It would help if you told us what card it is.

it's a Radeon 9600 pro, a fairly ordinary one from Crucial, it has a nice shiny gold heatsink though

That card definitely needs a fan to not overheat. I recommend you avoid running it until you get a fan.

Sounds defective. It's a waste of time questioning why tho. Electromechanical devices are subject to failure.
Replace it as soon as you can. You've got evacuate the heat from that heatsink.

    Noone has asked this yet?

What does the thread title have to do with the thread?

Though that scene in Anchorman is funny as hell.

Yes. I have used an 80mm fan for cooling a graphics card. I made a support with a metal bracket from an old ISA card. I bolted the fan to it and fixed it into place by fitting it to the PCI openings at the back of the case.
