Hi to all. As a matter of interest, if I plugged my computer into a router would it change my IP address?

Generally yes as the router will show a different mac unless you set it to mac cloning.
Most cable ISP when seeing a new mac will issue a new IP if the previous was released prior to logging back in...

Your internet IP might change and might not change...it probably will though becausse of what reality said.
Your computer's IP adress will definately change...to something like 192.168.x.x

Your PC always has an IP address, and in most configurations it only has one.
Without a router, your PC's IP address is the internet address which it gets from your ISP.
With a router, your router gets the internet address from your ISP and it needs that address for itself, so it has to give the attached PC an internal network address.
Only the internet address is visible externally.

the internet IP will actually be your router's IP adress and anything sent to that adress is forwarded to your computer (sometimes ports need to be forwarded to allow incoming data to know which computer to go to).
your computer will only have a network ip (with a router) and will not actually know it's internet ip, but you can check it by going to sites such as www.whatsmyip.com

Most routers have a "statistics" or a "status" page also that will have this information available to you under the WAN heading.
Basically the same information is displayed within your router's virtual page just as if you had right-clicked your internet connection in "network connections" and chosen "status". Although if you did this while having your router connected, you would only get a "not available" listing.
