Thread: Computer upgrade Help!

  1. #1
I'm buying my parts from newegg. All I am upgrading is my motherboard, processor, and memory and possibly the hard drive. Price range around $500.

Alright, my question is should I get the Athlon 64 3200+ socket 939 Winchester for $190 and get a better motherboard and memory and also a hard drive or should I get the Athlon 64 3500+ socket 939 Clawhammer for $267 and get a decent motherboard and and decent memory with no new hard drive?

The 3200 Winchester you picked* and this Gigabyte board will make a very nice platform to start with. You'll have more SATA (8!), USB (10) and Firewire than a normal person can use and the socket orientation is ideal for aftermarket HSFs.
If you are considering an upgrade to the CPU cooling, be aware that Gigabyte installs a (semi)proprietary socket surround so make sure your unit comes with a full install kit (backplate too).

*The 90nm cores are really the way to go.
Better memory controllers and the 1.4v vCore makes for very cool temps.
So far my new 3500 Winchester is running about 10C less than the 3000 Clawhammer I replaced.
