I see the announcment of the new dual core processors, but my only question is...how much of a processing difference will it make, and is it worth it to get a dual core processor now, or should you wait for a year or so.

    It's hard to tell.
My understanding is that until software has been optimized to utilize dual core, it won't matter at all.
One of my co-workers runs a dual processor Opteron system and only a few programs can deal with it effectively, so he really doesn't see any advantages over us single CPU guys.

I think the 1MB L2 cache San Diegos will be the cores to watch for...

Presumably the dual core processors appear as two separate processors to the OS (much like HT P4s, but with full cores).

If that's the case the benefits will be more noticeable in multi-user server systems because there is much more chance that different users will be using different apps, or if they are multi-user apps there's much more chance that they will have been optimised for multiple threads.

I doubt there will be much advantage for the home user running single tasks for quite a while, but multi-threading is fairly easy so I can foresee some game engines heading in that direction.

You can hardly say the word "processor" without starting the old AMD-Intel battle.
