Thread: 56K Dial up speed up tips

  1. #1
A buddy lives in isolated region and has dialup.
What are the best tweaks to speed up his websurfing?

I have seen sites like onspeed.com but dont know if they are legit. I seriously doubt he'll pay since fish and potatoes are free for him.
Putting in a hosts file lists seemed to have helped somewhat.
    Please advize.

    Hes using XPro

Yes google is there but it needs to sleep for this sesssion.

Those speed up progs are usually a scam. He's pretty much limited to 6K/sec, although that speed only exists in an ideal world. Unless he's got 100% fiber optic phoneline (no copper at all), speeds'll be anything between 3-5K/sec.

I have seen some programs like iSpeed or Propel (although this one needs support by the ISP to work) that make it seem like you're surfing faster. All they really do is get tricky with the cache or reduce the quality of images as they download.
He could probably achieve the same results by having a big cache that he never empties.

The only realistic things he can do is get his telco to check his line for noise and voltages, maximizing its efficiency.
He could also install a second phone line, buy another modem (it may need to be identical to what he's got now... I'm not sure) and run it in tandem with his existing line and modem to truly double his speed.

It's probably less hassle just to get adsl or cable tbh.

proxyconn would help with page loads and uncompressed files. it basicly uses proxies that compress the data before sending it to you, then the app uncompresses them when the downloading is finished. pretty sweet actually

    http://www.proxyconn.com/best1.asp

it won't speed up most EXE/ZIP/RAR transfers, as they're usually compressed already. but, there are a few exeptions out there...

Thankyou for the information. Will take look at all the above.
As for him getting adsl etc it would require serious contstruction work as he lives on an island.

How remote is the island? He might still be able to get adsl if he's not miles out in the ocean...

They don't make any modifications to the actual phoneline, the upgrade is done at the telephone exchange.

as remote as he gets hiss water from a well, and uses solar panels for electricity...

I will check with the phone company, he told me he'd tried to no avail..

Go to http://www.speedguide.net and download the TCP/IP Optimizer. All it is, is a simple program that optimizes certain registry items for better preformance. You choose ur internet connection (Dialup, DSL, Cable) and it modifies the reg files accordingly.
    blah blah blah... whatever...
