he fired up the mobo w/o bolting it down,
my guess is it was resting on the standoffs, and shorted
like, possibly a circuit touched the standoff...
that's how it seems to have happened, cant say, as Ad has not responded...

OK, if that's what happened (kinda what I gathered too, actually) then why should he RMA the stuff?
The product wasn't defective, the buyer was.
That sort of irresponsible use of the RMA process costs us all money in the end, after all, someone is going to pay for the mistake and it sure won't be the manufacturer...they'll just up the price to cover the losses.

I've actually had customers who were extremely pissed that I wouldn't replace a part that they obviously screwed up...a common error is the screwdriver slipping whilst trying to lever on a socketA heatsink.
One guy tried to RMA a motherboard that his cat puked on (how THAT happened I have no idea).
He brought it in with vomit still on it and was highly irate when we told him to fuck off.

It's one thing to get a defective part and another altogether to weasle out of reponsibility for your own mistakes.

and yeah, I see and believe your point about the misuse of the RMA process,
there's no denying it, same as insurance fraud, tax fraud, etc. it screws everyone else

I think I took such an adamant stand because it was an intel fanboy,
saying it was absolutely hopeless, fuck AMD and go intel, etc. etc. blah blah

plus theres still the off chance that nothing touched and it was just a DOA...maybe...
