Most AGP 8x cards will also run on 4x motherboards. You need to check what voltage you mobo will work at and compare that to the card, but other than that I don't foresee a problem.

    Edited your title.

i think ALL video cards will work on 4x AGP

isnt it backwards compatible? (they might run a little slower, but not enough to notice)
great FTP site for awesome quality video clips
yeah, you have to sign up, but its worth it

    Unfortunately not.

    Motherboards
Original AGP1.0 boards use 3.3v logic and signalling and aren't really compatible with anything else. 1x and 2x and 3.3v keyed.
    AGP2.0 uses 1.5V logic and signalling. 1x, 2x and 4x and 1.5V keyed.
Next come Universal AGP mobos which supports 3.3v and 1.5v so you can use AGP1.0 and AGP2.0 cards in these boards. 1x, 2x and 4x, no keys.
Next is AGP3.0 with 1.5V logic and 0.8v signalling. 4x and 8x only, 1.5v keyed.
Then there's Universal 1.5v AGP3.0 mobos. These can detect the difference between AGP2.0 and AGP3.0 cards and run in the appropriate mode. 1x, 2x and 4x (AGP2.0 mode), 4x and 8x (AGP3.0 mode), 1.5v keyed.
Finally there's Universal AGP3.0 mobos which can detect and run in any mode, any speed, not keyed. Not sure if any of these have been commercially produced.

    Cards
There are also 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and various universal cards with slots to match their corresponding keys. This generally means if you can fit the card to the board it won't blow it up, but does not ensure it will work.

If you've got a 4x mobo it will be AGP2.0 in which case you can't use cards which are AGP3.0 only.

What you need is a Universal 1.5v AGP3.0 card. They are 1.5v slotted and will run in AGP2.0 mode in a corresponding mobo or AGP3.0 mode in a AGP3.0 board.

I once tried getting this info about Ati cards, they neither they nor the Ati card builders seem to think it is important whether it is compatible with your system, but I happen to know that some of their top end cards are AGP3.0 only. That situation does not seem to have improved.

I've also tried getting the compatibility info about Nvidia cards. It used to be fairly easy, but since AGP is now on the way out there seems to be less and less info available.

Look for cards which specify 4x or 8x speeds. If that's what it says then it should work. If it doesn't then it is their fault for mis-specifying so they shouldn't charge a restocking fee.

I think my Geforce 6600gt supported 2-8x agp, at least on paper, can't check how it's keyed as it's being repaired atm tho'.

This is the sort of specification you need to look for:
    http://www.aopen.nl/products/vga/Aeolus6800-DV128.htm
Notice the AGP generation says 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 which means it is a universal AGP card. Also signal voltages are 0.8, 1.5 and 3.3

Compare that to the 6600GT which says AGP 3.0 only:
    http://www.aopen.nl/products/vga/Aeo...T-DV128AGP.htm
Yet it says 1.5v signalling which is AGP2.0

Then there's the 5200 which also says AGP3.0 only:
    http://www.aopen.nl/products/vga/AeolusFX5200-DV256.htm
But this one says signal voltages are 0.8, 1.5 and 3.3 which is universal.

    Confused yet? I sure am.

Edit: just noticed you've only got $50 so you can't afford any of them.
    Stop wasting our time.

Well it would depend on the rest of the system. No use installing a good card on a system that won't be able keep up.

If the board only supports AGP 4X then I suspect it might not be worth getting a 9600XT.

@TheCanuk... Post the rest of the computer specs please.
