Making videos smaller

I have got a video on my pc and its over a gig. I copied it from a dvd so its big in screen size and good quality. How can i make it so its less in size?

tried that. the quality after uncompressing isnt the same as the source file


like harrycary posted try Divx. you most likely have an uncompressed avi.
