Why do you want to remove Java?

You can disable it if you want, on your browser click Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > untick the boxes in the MS Virtual Machine section.

I just ran into something similar. I wanted to unistall update 3 of J2SE. So I could install update 4. Tried the usuals. Heres what worked & worked perfectly & easily. I had an inkling that J2SE was an .msi file. I already have "Windows Installer Clean Up" (Google it). Opened it up there it was J2SE. Selected it. WICU uninstalled it. I verified this by going to Add/Remove, gone. Next I rebooted. Then opened up Windows Explorer (NOT IE) deleted remant folder of J2SE. Then used TuneUp Utilities 2004 1-Click Maintenance till it came up clean. That was twice & a 3rd time just to check. Rebooted. Installed J2SE update 4. No problems. One could substitute other registry cleaners & possibly not reboot. But I've found reboots kind of clear things when ripping out programs that won't go nicely.
