open the program, click tools > options > preferences tab > untick run this program when windows starts. Then right click icon in tray and choose exit.
If you want to remove Windows Messenger completely from Windows XP with SP2 then do the following:
Start>Run -> Cut and paste or type the following command.
Click OK when done.Code:RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Thanks guys,
Is that code a bit risky ?
Is there a registry entry I can enter to disable it ?

You can remove it from windows by going to add/remove programs > add/remove windows components > untick Windows Messenger and then click next.
It's not risky. I've used it many times.
you can also use this program but I think your problem is allready solved

try not installing it at all when you install xp next time, by customizing your install
