i believe it was 400 years. i read that in an article on some computer magazine. might be 300 or 500. but it'll last
I bought and burned My first cd-r in '98 and it still works
They will last for a long time.
btw this is the correct forum for such questions.

I think that it is somewhat dependent on what you have burned onto the disk.
A Britney Spears CD I believe, will rot from the inside out in under 3 years....

Wouldn't it start to rot as soon as you took it out of the writer?Originally posted by clocker@29 December 2003 - 19:09

I remember watching The Screensavers on TechTV where they were talking about a guy that did an expirment where he bought some CD-r's back in about '98, burned data too them, and put them in a dark cabinet, for one straight year.
He took them out, and some of the data was already corrupted.
Anyway, just remember to buy QUALITY CD's, from quality companies like, Sony, etc, you will pay more, but the CD's will last longer.
Oh btw, a side note, data on Floppys lasts only for about one year before it starts getting corrupted.
so what do we learn from john's tale?
dont put cds on dark cabinets
you do have to remember that the cds back in 98 were REALLY bad quality......

Wow had some of mind over ten years does that mean they might suddenly self distruct hmm FIRER
