    1. What is h.264? What does the 264 stand for?

    2. Is x264 the same as h.264? If not, what's the difference?

    3. What's better, Bluray rips or HDDVD rips?

    4. What has better quality, MKV or WMV files?

    Thank you for your time.

I didn't know where to put this, so I put it here. Feel free to move it mods.

Really ? Hd-dvd and Blu-ray are simply optical supports with different capacities. While the BR support is capable of containing 50 GB,it is to be noticed that most of the ones actually available are BD 25 (25 GB capacity)...which is very much the same than hd-dvd.Even worse, the BR re-releases use exactly the same masters than the hd-dvd original ones but they pack the thing up to 50 GB with stuff that you might not be interested in.You want the movie.
As for the definition you want to choose 720p if it's a dvd9 (around 8 gigs),take 1080p if you have something like "dvd9+dvd5" (Around 13-14 gigs, knowing for example that the movie's I'm a hero original VC-1 uncompressed file weighs only 17 gigs)

    4. What has better quality, MKV or WMV files?

    Yes and no.Cf: Doom9,multiple threads.

    Thank you for your time.
    You waisted it,to be precise.

    SEnorBubbz,just use:
    - Coreavc for x.264 720 and 1080p
    - Ac3filter for the sound
    - Haali media splitter for .mkv support
Install this and wmp11 will recognise them without any pb.DO NOT INSTALL CODEC PACKS OR FFDSHOW or you'll enter a world of hd pain,I can tell you that.
