Close, it is more a derogatory term for subset within the lower class. Though I don't think you really have to be lower class to be identified as a chav, as evidenced by the initial post in this thread.

As to where it comes from I recall from that terrible Julie Burchill's documentary that it might derive from Romany language. (That's gypo talk.)

bollocks, it's a trendyfied version of charver, made to look less twatful than they are by the media in the last year or so. Real charvers are the types with their pasty babies and dole money, thieving and vandalising bus stops on their council estates. I went to school with plenty of them
