Hey clocker, Ive been checking out the opteron's lately, what's your suggestion for a budget one?
I bought mine used from the [H] forum classifieds.
I much prefer this approach...not only is it cheaper but you know the stepping you're getting.
As in, dont' want to spend too much, but still optimal performance (I do plan on overclocking, not by much though).
Also, I'm totally new to watercooling, do you need a completely different Case or can you implement it to any case. Also, do different the new socket's not support it? Googling has shown me that 939 is nowhere on the list.
Of course s939 is supported...every watercooling component manufacturer makes stuff for that platform.
The case is up to you.
Any case can be made to work but some cases are easier to work with than others. In general, I would avoid compartmented cases (Lian-li V series, Antec P180 for instance, although the Silverstone TJ07 might be an exception to this rule...) and go for the biggest, most wide open case you can get.
My personal preference would be the CoolerMaster TC-101 Stacker (NOT any of the later variants though).
I really want to get a new system set up for under 1200 dollars Canadian that has an opteron in it with water cooling (if that is outside the budget, then I can/will crank up the budget to 2000).
edit: and no, I have yet to check the prices on opterons, will do right now.
edit edit: Is this baby better than the 3500+ :
