I've always serviced my cars myself. Honestly, it's so simple that once you've done it the first time you wonder who'd pay Kwik-Fit to put cheap shit in and overcharge for the privelege.

or you buy a used car, go to change the oil and find that whoever changed the oil last used the wrong size wrench and rounded the plug to a perfect circle so that there is no way to grip the head. that makes things fun.

If you don't know how to change oil in DIY way which is suppose to be very basic. you may opt to go to Rapide or usually the gasoline stations, they usually do change oil there. just watch and you'll find it real easy. If you're confident enough next time do it yourself and you'll save lots of money. ^_^

I take mine to the local garage to get done. It works out about the same for me at about £30.

    while if i did it
    £20 for oil
    £6 for the new filter

plus the extra hassle of actually having to dispose of the old oil down the dumps.

Whereas they're not putting in £20 oil, they're likely using £5 and a £2 filter.

Think about it - what company can afford to only make £10 for a half hour slot?

This whole thread has made me think I ought to change my oil.

    Wtf? Changing oil?

I thought that you just topped it up when it went a bit low and only if you had a really old, shit car did it ever need a total change.
