Few questions which might help pin it down:
1) Are you running xp or windows 2000 or windows 98?
2) when did you first notice it
3) had you installed anything new (hardware or software) or run windows update shortly before you first noticed it
4) Does it happen everytime you open "my documents" or is it sporadic
5) Can you access my documents in other ways, e.g. if you open up microsoft word and go File -> Open can you browse into the my documents folder without any problem?

I had a similar problem accessing files in my network places. The solution, rather, the workaround, was to go to my computer > choose tools > folders options > tick use windows classic folders.
This is for win XP.

It sounds like there's something wrong with the videos. Is it set to thumbnails? Maybe you need a new codec for them. Try getting the latest version of k-lite codec pack. http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm
I use the 2.72 full version. That should fix it.
