@100%, I think your best strategy is to try and pay but let them win in the end. That way they don't think you're cheap, but they feel good for having paid for dinner thus giving you some brownie points. Now if you often go out to dinner with her parents then it might be a good idea to invite them out some time and make it clear the whole night is on you
And to answer the other part of your question, yes it is very common my in-laws always try to pay for everything
It's tradition. Offer to pay and if they insist let them. If your feeling guilty about it either get over it or do something nice and unexpected that they would like.
