sometimes, for no reason at all, it turns into the red circle.

i'm on tinyxp rev09, so i don't have a firewall on - not even window's firewall (it doesn't exist). this version of xp is completely stripped down, and i think that may be the source of my problem.

i've done this routine many times before. i created a static ip address for my wireless connection and forwarded the port used by utorrent in my linksys router... to no avail. i double- and triple-checked whether the ip addresses and the ports match; they do. i'm so lost.

i think the problem is either that i don't have windows firewall or i'm not running a vital networking service. it isn't because i'm using v1.8, because v1.7 experiences the same problem.

    please help

This indicates there is a severe network problem on your local system.
If you're just 'NATted' because of the router, it would never turn red.

If you have the red circle again, you could try to hover it and read what it says.
I'm not sure how else you could analyze this problem...

well now it's yellow, and has been yellow the greater part of last night too.
i just restarted it and yeah, it's red. it says:
"A firewall/router is limiting your network traffic. You need to open up a port so others can connect to you"

it's been enabled. i enabled upnp in utorrent, while still having the port forwarded in linksys... and now the alert is a yellow triangle. progress has been made!

nvmd it turned back to that indelible red circle.

try putting yourself in a DMZ if your router has that option (it should), and as said above consult portforward.com
