In a way, Canada is "safer" than the United States; ISPs there won't really get on your ass like in the US where they'll shape your traffic or throttle you completely (Comcast?)

As I said before, there's always a chance you'll get caught. Proxies won't save you if authorities really want to get you.

I don't really believe in things that are "less safe" to download. If the MPAA is targeting a specific tracker, then movies wouldn't be "safe". If the RIAA is targeting you, then music wouldn't be "safe". It's best not to think about this stuff, it probably won't happen to you.

sites with anonym modes or that don't let you view the peers are much, much safer.

how is that safer? download .torrent, join swarm, view IP addresses. hiding your name on the site offers no security at all.


edit: you don't even have to download/upload any data to other peers to get a list of IP address on a torrent.

Kamon, that sucks, usenet, no way, i used it trust me, rapidshare is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy much more betten than usenet, mostly comments are in german so you dont know whether file works or not and so forth. There is a very big possibility that the game you download wont work...and so forth. Dont waste your money on usenet, get seedbox, buffer like hell

I have used Usenet for 5 years, never got 1 fake, never downloaded 1 german game, and never ever seen any german comments.

in the last month i have downloaded 400gig from there, and everything works fine.

so i dont know what you were using, but you were obviously not using it properly lol

as for safety on private sites, its very debatable, just because no one has been sought after yet (apart from the oink uploaders) does not mean in the next year they are not going to come down hard.

it is safer than public, but how safe, is anyones guess, especially with them coming after us these days.

E-learning and porn torrent sites will be the last torrent sites taken down, since the owners of the pirated material hosted on those sites don't form a conglomeration as large and as powerful as the owners of the pirated music and movies. Power influences the government more than principle, as you are well aware.
So, to answer your question: the least safe commodities are new films and music - anything under the watchful eye of the MPAA and RIAA. You don't have to worry about getting sued for downloading ebooks, audiobooks, applications, or even games - but knock on wood!

I do not think there is so much to be afraid of, if you just use a seedbox to upload and download with .. But yes, I think that MPPA, resulting in what is happening in the torrent world.

Rather short-sighted argument imo. Why would you be safer using a seedbox. Don't you pay for that seedbox? When you have to pay for it there will also be a trace back to you.

Anyway ... if sharing copyrighted stuff is illegal in your country you always have the risk being held responsable for it. There are degrees in 'safety', like the difference between a closed private tracker and a public tracker, the location where the tracker is hosted, etc ... but in the end you're always vulnerable when using P2P cause there isn't any way to do it completely anonymous.

Someone said the fact you have an anonymous peerlist on a tracker makes it more safe. I don't believe that is true. The tracker logs show who you are, the tracker staff can see who you are and when authorities get their hands on the server you ain't gonna be safe because your name appeared as 'anonymous' on the peerlist.

A BT-user is always at risk, some more than others and you can do some things to make it a bit less unsure but never completely.

I've never had a problem on any private site. I've also never had a problem when I was using soulseek, emule, or public torrent sites.

I dont wanna stop torrenting, but I wanna help myself being safer.
Im not at best economically and I dont wanna get a letter from my ISP and then have to pay 1000-2000 $ ... grrrrr
Anyway so people really get caught without private trackers being put down?
