It seems turning down a a flexible hours request for part time work on the grounds of it not fitting business requirements is perfectly valid. Even if the person who did the job before me only worked part time.
It also seems it is perfectly ok to announce redundancies and then request said lady with teh child to work hours she can't possibly adhere to due to nursery opening times. It seems getting rid of an extra person that way to cut cost is acceptable

On another note that doesn't sound like something that should be allowed. I know it wouldn't be here. I know this because I've had to read through the whole binder (
) at work which contains such matters, looking for ways to cover all bases wrt our software.
And why aren't you in the union anyways?
