Apparently he's been chased for over 30 years, but fled to France to avoid arrest. I find it interesting that the French felt no motivation to capture him, but now he moved to Switzerland and got arrested.

I take it you are talking about the French.
You know he had French citizenship so the French government had a perfect right to deny extradition on the US warrant but he had an international warrant against him since 2005.
Of course it's all bollocks though since the victim of the crime doesn't even want it pursued.
