This is the sort of World News I like..

I'm quite inspired that they are pursuing this adventure, when it seems that the exploration of space has ground to a halt for NASA and the Russians, and not only because of the shuttle accident. (The end of the Cold War also spelled the end of the Space Race, 'cos there was no-one left to "beat")

Although some will say they are 40 years too late, the technology they are employing is supposed to be very advanced, so I predict they won't take 40 years to overtake the other two in terms of achievement.

I'd love to see them send a man to the moon! Maybe even set up a permanent base. It's time we humans started planning to utilise more of the natural resources of the solar system, such as the moon, and asteroids, to eventually take the strain off the natural resources of Earth.

Hopefully this weeks event will open up a whole new exciting chapter in human history.

    (Hopefully)

There only the third country to ever have done this, so puts them light years ahead of most I guess

    Barb,

That is not really true. As the Soviet Union began to crumble the US and Russia were jointly engaged in building the International Space Station. Their financial woes sucked enormous amounts of money from Nasa as they struggled to prop up the Russian's end of the bargain. Too bad really...

    Me too.

I've heard it said that if development of the American space-program had continued at the same pace as it did during the cold war, they'd have been on mars by now, and possibly starting on a permanent moonbase by now.

ESA haven't been much competiton to NASA yet, but this should make the Americanos pick up their pace again.

I think you will find it is measure of both time and distance (fancy not knowing that, lol), a light year is the distance light will travel in year, so in future to save time lets just assume i know everything, lol

a light year is measured in a unit of distance, nothing else
therefore it is only a distance

if it were x km/year then it would be an amalgamation of distance and time, however, it would then be a speed

maybe we should assume i know everything...
